Arts Jobs Salaries: India & AmericaMarch 1st, 2010 Posted by VFreshers
“I began to realize how simple life could be if one had a regular routine to follow with fixed hours, a fixed salary, and very little original thinking to do.”
It’s certainly unbelievable for Indian parents to even think of various career options apart from doctor, engineer, teacher and then banking for their wards. More certainly may be due to lesser options and choices available earlier, but time has changed now.
The moment the word “art” enters into Indian homes, the air changes and turns electric. The father glares, the mother makes a worried face and the teenager’s heart sinks. He loves painting and believes he can make a career out of it, but no, there is no way you will let that happen. “How will he ever be able to support himself by painting or playing a guitar?” is a million dollar question for worried Indian parents.
It’s strange that wanting to take up a career in art is not usually well-accepted in Indian homes. After all, Indian art is deeply rooted in our history and culture. Indian art is supposed to be among the best in the world. India’s history is rich with musicians, painters, philosophers, writers and poets of the greatest order. Most of our folk tales are based on artistic figures.
Today all artistic fields pay extremely well. People pick alternative careers because they feel they have the creative edge to excel. Be it CD sales or performance fees for musicians, or exhibitions for painters, or the movies for an actor, such artists in recent years have been earning as much as the conventional “doctor/engineer” earns.
Take for example painting; many people feel the need to have paintings in their homes. Frequent exhibitions happen in cities and talented artists are quickly sold out. And with experience a good artist can have a strong and steady income.
A lot of magazines and websites feature painters and art on a regular basis, thus ensuring that a talented artist is always in the spotlight. And sketchers, illustrators and painters can always choose to enter the graphics and designing domain, where they are paid well for their skills. Median Salary of an art director- less than one year 25,000- 35,000; one to four years 35,000-55,000; five to nine years 45,000-70,000; ten to 19 years 50,000-70,000; 20 and plus 50,000-70,000
According to the American Institute of Graphic Arts, median annual cash compensation for entry-level designers was $35,000 in 2008. Staff-level graphic designers earned a median of $45,000. Senior designers, who may supervise junior staff or have some decision-making authority that reflects their knowledge of graphic design, earned a median of $60,000.
Solo designers who freelanced or worked under contract to another company reported median earnings of $57,000. Design directors, the creative heads of design firms or in-house corporate design departments, earned $95,000. Graphic designers with ownership or partnership interests in a firm or who were principals of the firm in some other capacity earned $95,000.
