CAREER OPTIONS IN INDIA
November 4th, 2008 Posted by VFreshersFresher Graduates or young students who are looking for a foothold in the world of careers have lots of options open for them in India.
Let us enumerate these options based on the income generation power that they hold.
Management is something that is always in good demand. A graduate who has done Business administration can expect a good starting salary in the range of 4 to 5 lakhs. And then the corporate ladder has no stop gaps. If he is good at his managerial skills then he can climb the corporate ladder within a few years.
Software engineers are next in line. If a student knows his programming skills really well then no one can stop him from generating an income of around 5 lakhs per annum.
Then the next career in demand and where a fresher can easily get into is Mechanical, Electonics or Chemical Engineering. There are lots of jobs for engineers provided they can prove their mettle and have good communication skills.
Next option could be in the field of finance. A commerce graduate could go on to become a chartered accountant or CFA. He/she could join a chartered accountants firm, work for a consultancy, join the plethora of banks domestic and international or join any company in their finance department. This sector has been generating many jobs for graduates.
If numbers are not your forte, do not fret. Language and the ability to express ideas can pay you good dividends too. You could become a journalist in any newspaper, magazine or for the many TV channels that are mushrooming everyday. Today journalists command a lot of respect as there is a lot of fame and glamour associated with them. If you have a nose for the right kind of news that will interest your readers than great power is what you will command.
Advertising is another option. You could become a copy writer if you are creative, imaginative and have a way with words. Or you could also join the other departments within advertising such as space marketing, finance.
If you have exemplary peoples skills and can charm anyone than Public Relations is what you should be looking at. In this career you get to act as a liaise and network with a lot of important people and build up some great contacts.
Students with specialized degrees can go ahead to become doctors, lawyers or architects.
Other career options, for graduates, are the BPO or ITES industry which has been attracting people in huge numbers. They offer you the option of earning while you learn too. These can be the best place for you to learn and hone your leadership, communication and inter-personal skills.
Next are the government jobs provided you are able to clear the entrance test. You could also try in the defense or air force or navy if that is where your interests lie.
Careers in the real estate industry are also a new boon nowadays. With all the construction activity around and huge projects in every major town and city this is a viable option too.
If you like customer service and selling things then marketing could be a good career option too. You need to have the gift of the gab, willing to travel and not take disappointments personally to excel in this industry.
