COMPUTER PROGRAMMING AS A CAREER: IS IT FOR YOU ?

Computers have impacted every sphere of our lives. There is not a single person who is not hooked on to the World Wide Web and those who haven’t have certainly missed out a lot.

All of these computers rely on computer programs to run them. Therefore, jobs for computer programmers are not going to be hit by recession for some time to come.

You might wonder if it is really in you to make the mark of a good computer programmer. In order to decide you need to consider these points.

  • Keep in mind that a career will be something that you will be doing for your entire life. You might want to think about what interests you. If computer and programming it is your passion then you will certainly be able to make a mark in this field. If you are interested in it then it will not seem like work at all. You will have the enthusiasm and zeal required to work long hours at the computer.
  • Try and prepare yourself well to find out if computer programming is really for you. Read up as much as you can on it, talk to friends or colleagues who are already into it and of course surf the internet. Take personality tests online to see if you are suited for this profession. There is no sense in not planning initially and then burning your fingers. Plan thoroughly before you decide to join the computer programming boat.
  • Every profession requires certain inherent skills. In the field of computer programming it does not matter if your communication skills are not top-notch as you can catch up with them later. But, your numerical and analytical skills must be an edge above the rest. You must be able to analyze and think logically if you want to be successful in this field. Trouble shooting of problems is an important area and you must have the patience and know how to be able to do this. Computer programmers also need to think out of the box and innovatively to come up with the requisite solutions. Creativity is another important criterion.
  • There are certain tasks that a computer programmer will have to do day in and day out. These tasks might become repetitive and monotonous. Check if you have all the skills, knowledge and attitude required for this particular role.
  • Look for the long term career prospects and growth in this particular field. Think of different lateral moves that you could take in the same field. Also, keep in mind where will you be five or ten years from when you start. Does it offer you a steady and secure career path?

If you are able to answer all these questions after enough time spent introspecting and being honest with yourself you will be able to decide whether computer programming is really an option for you. It is good to spend time at the beginning deciding, rather than rue it later.
