We’ve redefined our business strategy, sharpened our customer focus and are determined to regain the confidence and trust of our shareholders. But this is just the start, and as we look to the future, graduates and interns will have a crucial role to play.
From your first day, we’ll be investing heavily in your development, providing you with the support and resources you need so you’re ready to grasp and make the most of every opportunity that comes your way.
Global Banking & Markets (GBM) is the investment banking arm of the RBS group and provides financing and risk management products to large corporates and financial institutions around the world. Our business offers solutions to our clients and brings together an extensive range of capabilities including debt and equity financing, risk management and corporate finance advisory services all with the aim of helping them achieve their objectives.
Summer Internships for penultimate year students:
For penultimate year students, we offer a range of ten-week to 6-month internships across all our different business areas. These are open to students from all academic disciplines who can demonstrate an interest in banking and finance. They are normally held in the summer, but for students in Continental Europe we offer alternative opportunities throughout the year.
We give all our interns the opportunity to experience a number of different business areas. We will also give you the chance to showcase your talents. Perform well, and we’ll offer you a graduate position for the following year.
1. GBM Markets – during your internship you will undertake a range of placements including Trading, Sales, Research & Strategy and Structuring:
The businesses within Markets are diverse and a Markets analyst is trained across the products we sell, fixed-income, equity, commodity, foreign exchange, derivative and money markets. Where they learn to work as a team to provide our clients with a seamless range of financial products in both mature and emerging markets all over the world.
2. GBM Banking – you will gain real experience with rotations across Corporate Finance, Debt Capital Markets, Equities Origination, Sector & Country Coverage and Portfolio:
GBM Banking is a part of Global Banking & Markets (GBM), the investment bank of RBS. This division advises clients on the full range of investment banking solutions, including acquisitions and disposals, raising capital, structuring balance sheets and managing risk exposures. Balance sheet assets within the GBM portfolio are also monitored and managed here.
3. GBM Operations (Manchester and Newcastle-under-Lyme):
Operations is one of our largest functions with 3,000 people worldwide. From the moment a trade is booked, right through to validation and settlement, the team here is responsible for the end-to-end management of all our transactions. As well as ensuring deals actually happen, they look after our processes and help to deliver competitive advantage.
Analyst roles in: Operations
Our business simply wouldn’t function without Operations. Working closely with the front office, the team here processes 285,000 trades every day and manages cash assets worth £750 billion.
Join them and you will be responsible for the end-to-end management of our transactions. You’ll ensure that deals struck in the front-office develop exactly as they should. This is no mere support role however. By managing the risk of fraud, you will act as a guardian of the business. You’ll also have an impact on our profitability too – by streamlining our processes and making them more efficient.
4. GBM Technology:
Operating across five continents, we provide the technological infrastructure and develop state-of-the-art tools for all parts of our business. We use the latest programming languages and technologies to create bespoke solutions and collaborate closely with other departments to ensure these solutions are aligned to clients’ needs.
Analyst roles in: Technology
Our remit goes far beyond support. In the fiercely competitive world of finance, it’s vital we have the best technology at our fingertips.
Technology is at the heart of everything we do. It allows us to trade across time zones, perform complex calculations, transfer funds and disseminate information. That’s why we design, build and maintain our systems in-house. If we want to retain our competitive edge, we need the very best customised solutions.
Graduates who join this programme are allocated to different product areas. Once assigned, you’ll undertake two rotations: one in the front office and one in the back office which will give you a broad understanding of financial markets, projects and product styles. Whether you are developing or supporting an application, you can expect to be building, integrating and delivering solutions for a specific business.
