GOVERNMENT JOBS VS. PRIVATE JOBS IN INDIAMay 28th, 2009 Posted by VFreshers
There has always been a tussle in the minds of youngsters & Fresher Graduates about whether they should opt for government and “Sarkari” jobs or private MNC and corporate jobs.
Let us look at each of these sectors individually and see what they have to offer us. In a government job there is job security. You can join it after you graduate and leave when you retire. The salaries are quite good, not as much as in the private sector but so is the workload.
There is no appraisal so far in government jobs. As long as you are able to keep your supervisors or the so called “Babus” happy everything will be fine with you. You will be doing the same thing for a long time hence you will gain expertise in it and develop your comfort zone.
You will be quite surprised to hear but in the government sector the promotions depend on the tenure in the company rather than meritocracy. It is not the syndrome of shape up or ship out. You won’t have to perform or perish out here.
The government jobs in India will give you the job security like nothing else will. The starting salary is really high nowadays after the pay commission.
On the other hand a job in the Indian private sector is completely different ball game and you need to march to a different tune altogether. You do have the tasks to perform which are different so that the learning that happens on the job is phenomenal. You will be able to pick up the right amounts of knowledge, skill and attitude and that to at a very rapid pace. This is quite a fair playing ground where you will have a chance to prove your mettle and talents.
There will be lots of times and opportunities for you to prove your talents to the seniors and get noticed. If you are good you need to showcase your talents and get noticed. You will have to ensure visibility and work hard all the time. There will be no time when you can depend on your past laurels.
It does not matter what you achieved yesterday. What is important is what you achieved today. The job environment is so fast changing in India along with rest of the world and so dynamic in private companies that if you don’t keep up with everything around you, you will be left far behind in the rat race. You will always need to be on your toes. The promotions will only be based on the basis of your ability and nothing else.
The salary, perks and the constant incentives will be far better than in the government sector. But, the rat race is too much and not many people will be able to withstand the tempo. There might be a time when you will reach an area of burn out and want to opt out which is never going to happen with a Government vacancy in India.
Everything has its own pros and cons and what depends is what is right for you. Just like different strokes for different folks. What might suit one, might not suit another one.
