HOW TO DRESS FOR MY FIRST JOB INTERVIEW

July 22nd, 2009 Posted by VFreshers

Dress your way to success in an interview. If you wonder whether the way you dress matters it certainly does. Imagine turning up for an interview in jeans, a T-shirt and a pair of floaters. This might look real cool but it will not be considered so by the interviewer.

Whatever industry that you work in appearances does matter. Appearances go on to create perceptions about you. You do want to project your best self to the interviewer and you can certainly do that if you have taken care about dressing formally. It is considered better to be a little overdressed rather than underdressed. When confused always opt for the conservative as this can never go wrong.

At the interview the first few seconds are crucial as that is when the interviewer makes the decision about his/her interest in you as an employee. You don’t really need to spend a bomb to look just right for the interview.

For women going for an interview opt for solid dark colors as far as possible. No sequins or shiny stuff on your attire. Wear shoes that are comfortable and give you a good walk. Wear limited and classy jewelery if you must. Gold is supposed to be avoided and of course no long dangling earrings. Limit your make up too. Accessorize appropriately as in a nice leather bag, a portfolio or folder. Do not wear heady perfume that can be distracting. Wear your hair off your face in a neat tied back hairstyle. Remember that hygiene is important be it in the form of manicured clean nails, clean hair or good ironed clothes.

Some of the same things apply for men. Wear long sleeved shirts with thin stripes or plain light pastel colors. Checks on shirts are considered informal and not accepted by many corporate. Wear dark trousers as they look formal. Keep in mind that the socks must be always dark and formal shoes should be worn. Set your hair neatly no punk hairstyles or piercing displayed. Do not show your tattoos if any. Use appropriate accessories such as a nice formal belt and a briefcase for your certificates. Go easy on the aftershave and of course no jewelry for sure. Do not chew gum whilst speaking. Switch off your mobile phone and keep it out of view. Also, if you are used to an ipod do not carry that around. Remember a professional conservative image is what you must present.

The first impression that you make on an interviewer is the most important one. And certainly the first impression is not on the way you speak or present yourself but on your attire and overall personality that shines through. Even before you have spoken or said a single word the perception has already been formed in the interviewers mind.

The way you are dressed speak s a lot about the kind of person you are and the importance that you have placed for the interview.
