HOW TO RESIGN FROM A JOB ?

July 21st, 2009 Posted by VFreshers

If you are planning to resign from your job you need to do it as tactfully, diplomatically and with finesse as possible. You might be contemplating how much you are going to miss some of your colleagues who you hung around with and how you don’t want to see some of your colleagues ever again as long as you live on the earth.

You need to be as gracious as ever with you’re to be ex employer as possible. People usually move around within the same industry and you never know when you will meet them again. The world is a small place and you might bump into them in the most unlikely of places.

Try to leave on good terms as this will hold you in good stead wherever you plan to work in the future. Word of mouth and the grapevine are strong factors and you don’t want negative word to get around about you. Keep your manners and demeanor intact at all times even during your last days at work.

Think things over and once you have decided to quit the job look at the contract that you signed while joining. Look for the company’s policies and procedures written in them and try to follow them to the T. Go to your supervisor and hand over your resignation letter. Of course you will be asked to state the reason. However much you are tempted out here to call a spade a spade do not indulge in that.

At the same time if there has been something haunting you then say it as tactfully as possible. Do not play the blame game, just state facts and let the other person decide. If the person tries to convince you to stay but you have made up your mind politely decline. In case you decide to stay then negotiate a better deal for yourself. After the meeting send your resignation letter by an email stating the things agreed upon in the meeting.

Remember to give enough notice to the company wherein you can complete any pending projects and assignments that you have on hand. You must handover all the incomplete work to the next person who will be stepping into your shoes.

Settle all the financial dealings before you leave. Look for all the leaves and compensation that were due to you and if they are in the final settlement pay out to you.

Try and complete any assignments that you can. Do not bad mouth the company or your supervisor or colleagues as it always gets back to the person’s ears.

Before you walk out of the office for the last time, ensure that you have cleared your desk and shred whatever you don’t want. You must handover all the keys and stationery. Send a goodbye mail to all your colleagues with your contact information on it.

Ensure that you thank people who have been your supporters and walk out with your head held high.
